Rooted in a distinctly traditional sensibility, this Middlebury, Vermont residence reflects the natural evolution of a home built by its owners as a young couple and thoughtfully refined over the years as their family and lives grew. The renovation elevates the original character of the house while introducing a greater sense of permanence, elegance, and cohesion throughout.
The project encompasses a substantial kitchen addition and complete kitchen renovation, a primary suite renovation, loft suite renovation, guest bath renovation, and the addition of a new powder room. Each space was designed to feel inherently connected to the home’s traditional architecture, with classical proportions, timeless materials, and an understated sense of luxury.
At the heart of the kitchen is a generously scaled walnut island—massive in presence yet elegant in proportion—featuring richly figured walnut burl panels as its defining detail. The kitchen balances this statement piece with tailored cabinetry and carefully considered architectural details, creating a space that feels both sophisticated and deeply livable.
Throughout the home, the design places particular emphasis on the clients’ collection of curated antiques and family heirlooms. Rather than treating these pieces as decorative accents, the renovation thoughtfully incorporates them into the architecture of the interiors, allowing generations of objects, memories, and craftsmanship to become part of the home’s visual narrative.
The result is a classically elegant residence that feels neither newly imposed nor overly formal, but instead like a more refined expression of a home that has evolved naturally over time—layered with history, warmth, and a distinctly personal sense of place.
